Why I'm leaving Substack for Ghost
I published my first newsletter in March 2024. Six months later, I'd grown to 8,400 subscribers. Then I realized something obvious: I was renting an audience I didn't own. This post is a technical + financial breakdown of what moving to Ghost actually cost, and what I'd do differently next time.

Features

Built for newsletter operators

You write the words. WriteMode handles the rest — every platform, every timezone, every click.

Compose once

Write in the extension popup or dashboard. Pick your platforms. Submit. Done.

Schedule ahead

Queue posts for optimal send times across every timezone. Best-time picker learns per platform.

UTM tracking baked in

Every link auto-tagged with utm_source/medium/campaign. See per-platform clicks in one dashboard.

Substack via browser session

No Substack API? No problem. We use your browser session — encrypted at rest with AES-256.

Reach that compounds

Posts that flop on one platform can crush on another. See opens, clicks, and forwards per platform.

Best-time scheduling

We track when each audience opens, then auto-pick the slot for max reach. No spreadsheet needed.

vs. the alternative

Stop copy-pasting. Start shipping.

If you're publishing to more than one platform, you know the pain. Here's what changes.

How it works

Three steps. Forever.

No OAuth dance. No zaps. No CSV exports.

Connect once

Click "Connect Substack/Beehiiv/Ghost/Medium/LinkedIn" — each takes ~30 seconds. Sessions are encrypted with your device key.

Compose & publish

Open the popup (⌘+E from anywhere), type your post, pick platforms, hit ⌘+Enter. Done — across every channel.

Watch your reach grow

Clicks and opens sync per-platform. See which audience loved the post, and double down.

Pricing

Pay for distribution, not features.

Every tier ships every feature. You pay for how many posts × platforms you ship.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is my Substack session really secure?
Yes. Your session cookie is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it leaves your device, using a key we generate and store in Cloudflare's secret store. Even if our database were exfiltrated, an attacker would need your key — which only WriteMode has in a non-recoverable form. You can revoke access from Substack → Settings → Active Sessions at any time.
What if WriteMode is down when I want to publish?
Your drafts live in two places: the extension's local storage (offline-first), and our D1 database (sync across devices). If WriteMode is offline, your draft is safe — you can paste it into each platform manually, or wait for us to recover. We target 99.9% uptime on Cloudflare's edge network.
Why doesn't Substack just give you an API?
Because they're a writer-first platform and don't want to enable mass-publish tools. We're not a spam tool — every WriteMode post is something you wrote in the same editor you'd use to write to Substack directly. It's just a better keyboard for the same job.
How does pricing work for Chinese users without Stripe?
We use Pancake as our Merchant of Record — they handle global payments including Alipay, WeChat Pay, USDT, and international credit cards. You get a normal subscription invoice; we get clean, predictable revenue. No VPN required.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. One click in your dashboard. You'll keep access until the end of the billing period, then auto-downgrade to the free tier. No retention emails, no "are you sure" modal.
How is this different from Buffer or Typefully?
Buffer is built for Twitter/LinkedIn short-form. Typefully is built for Twitter threads. WriteMode is built for long-form newsletter operators — the UTM tracking, best-time scheduling, and per-platform analytics all assume you're shipping 800+ word posts that need to land on 5 platforms.
